Triad Math and Science Academy was honored to have North Carolina Senator Gladys Robinson
visit our school on October 25, 2011. Senator Robinson and her intern, Mr. Kay Tembo, had the opportunity to take a school tour, meet with students and members of the TMSA family and receive an informative presentation from Mr. Orak, TMSA principal.
During her visit, Senator Robinson also attended the TMSA flag ceremony with the TMSA middle school students. TMSA dedicated its new flag poles to the school and the United States flag was flown for the first time here at our new school location. After the ceremony, Senator Robinson addressed the students about the importance of receiving quality STEM education and being successful in life.
Later on, Senator Robinson had the opportunity to talk to TMSA students in small groups. The students were very excited to learn more about the state government and what the differences were between the Senate and the House of Representatives. Senator Robinson asked student Alexis Ricketts, “What do you like most about TMSA?” Alexis stated, “My favorite thing about school is Science. We get to do lots of fun science experiments.” Another student, Madison Maxwell was asked, “What clubs are you involved in?” Madison answered, “I am in the R.A.K club (Random Acts of Kindness) and we get to do things to help others”.
At the end of Senator Robinson’s visit, she met with our Science Olympiad Team who won several competitions last school year. The students were very proud to show her the trophies that they won. Senator Robinson expressed how impressed she was with the school and said, “It is very obvious that there is lots of learning going on and I like seeing students excited about what they are learning. I am looking forward to coming to see the students again soon.”
The TMSA students, parents and staff were so excited on Senator Robinson’s interest in TMSA. “The more we introduce our school to all the stakeholders, the stronger our learning community gets.” said TMSA parent Abla Kafi. “As the first State Senator visiting TMSA, Senator Robinson’s visit energized the entire TMSA team.” said Joyce Sutton another TMSA parent.
TMSA follows NC academic standards and has been operating at its full capacity since its inauguration in August 2008. Currently serving over 500 students from Kindergarten through 10th grade, TMSA will add a new grade level every year and become a K-12 school within the next two years.
