College Prep

grads
At TMSA, students are encouraged to start planning and prepping for college as early as their freshman (9th grade) year.  The following are resources that students and parents can use to get prepared for college.

USEFUL RESOURCES:

Naviance- Naviance allows students to browse and research colleges, scholarships, and careers.  Students also use this resource heavily during their senior year to apply to colleges or universities.  Students are encouraged to use this tool before their senior year to help with college planning.

CFNC:  The College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) allows students to plan, apply, and pay for college.  There are tools allowing students to search for colleges, explore programs and majors, learn about college entrance requirements, and prep for the ACT and SAT.   Students can apply to colleges and scholarships directly through CFNC.  Information is also available for a better understanding of financial aid and how to pay for college.

CollegeBoard:  CollegeBoard is where students sign up to take the SAT.  The website allows students and parents to view SAT test dates, registration deadlines, testing and late fees, testing sites, and a test day checklist.  Students will also be able to view and send their scores to colleges using CollegeBoard.  CollegeBoard can be used to practice for the SAT using students’ PSAT scores (taken during their 10th and 11th grade year); the site provides various methods of practice for getting students ready to take the SAT (daily practice, practice tests).

ACT: The official ACT website is used to sign up for the ACT.  Students and parents can view ACT test dates, registration deadlines, testing and late fees, testing sites, and test scores.  The ACT website also provides study resources as well as college prep and planning resources, such as checklists for each year of high school.

Khan Academy:  Khan Academy is a great tool to aid students in getting prepared to take the SAT by offering free SAT prep.  They also provide free information on exploring college options, types of colleges, and many other topics including financial aid, majors offered, and the impact of location in the college search.
